Austria isn’t just known for its snowy Alps, as the setting for Sound of Music, or as the birthplace of famous composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss. Unknown to many, it is also the birthplace of another important artist — Gustav Klimt.
Born on July 14, 1862 in Baumgarten, Klimt went on to become one of the great Austrian symbolist painters of his time and a major contributor during the Art Nouveau period, until his death as a result of a stroke on Feb. 6, 1918.
Among Klimt’s greatest artworks is The Kiss, which is a world-famous icon of love and was even the subject of a Google Doodle made in 2012 in time for Klimt’s centennial birthday. His other great works include Avenue in Schloss Kammer Park, Judith and the Head of Holofernes and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
In honor of the great artist and in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his death, German porcelain manufacturer Goebel has added his work Lady with Fan to its list of novelties.
The porcelain maker interpreted Klimt’s last artwork, which was inspired by Byzantine mosaics, and placed it in a new, modern context. Ultraviolet, the Pantone Color of 2018 and a very untypical color for Klimt, was used to interpret the artwork and unites modern art with Klimt’s Art Nouveau of the early 20th century. It underlines the ornamental color surface and especially makes the gold elements gleam.
Goebel’s interpretation of Lady with Fan is available in vases, bowls and other accessories for daily use. Of particular interest is the eye-catching golden mirror, richly decorated with a golden frame and leaf accents.
Aside from The Kiss, among Klimt’s artworks that were added in Goebel’s 2018 novelties are The Music, The Tree of Life and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
Goebel is available at Rustan’s Makati, Rustan’s Shangri-La, Rustan’s Alabang Town Center and Rustan’s Cebu.
